Hebrews 2 (NIV)

Hebrews 2

Warning to Pay Attention

1We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Jesus Made Like His Brothers

5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:
"What is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?
7You made him a little[a] lower than the angels;
you crowned him with glory and honor
8and put everything under his feet?[b]In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12He says,
"I will declare your name to my brothers;
in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises."[c] 13And again,
"I will put my trust in him."[d] And again he says,
"Here am I, and the children God has given me."[e]

14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. 17For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for[f]the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

thought v 3 and 4 were cool...kind of like, how many proofs of God do we need and yet we still drift away???

"...first announced by the Lord, confirmed by those who heard...God testified...by signs...miracles...gifts of the Holy Spirit..."

i definitely fall prey to this...despite all of the "proof" and the amazing grace, i still fall...i know we all do, but sometimes it is really amazes me that when you look at the grace and mercy and the proofs of his existence, and the fact that we are talking about ETERNAL LIFE...that i still fall from God. wow! that's embarassing, frustrating, and yet i know it is human. well, boys, at least i recognize it and am working on it through and with you guys.

Heb 2

I agree timmcd, i find that i occasionally fall myself. We are human and satan will capitalize on any weakness. i would certainly agree with it being frustrating, but we should not dwell on it cause thats when satan has us where he wants us. Give praise for his grace and move on to the things that help you.

I thought the last couple of versed were also really cool. Similar to 1 Cor 10:13 verses 17-8 say.

17Therefore, it was necessary for Jesus to be in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. He then could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people.18Since he himself has gone through suffering and temptation, he is able to help us when we are being tempted.

I especially like how Paul makes it clear we are brothers and sisters with Christ in these chapters.

Father, keep us committed to You and Your word. Watch over us all and especially CRB and Ally and the new baby.

IN Christ,
Cas

Heb 2.
I agree with all of your comments. My comfort with you guys has changed: When we first started this blog, I certainly felt comforted that I wasn't the only "human male", that I wasn't the only stumbling, tripping, and falling Christian. But now I feel comforted by the fact that I'm clearly not the only one who's occasionally tripping but at least running in the right direction. It's too bad we can't take snapshots of our character and personality at different stages cause it would be striking to see any of our before and after pictures. It sure is comforting to know that we're all changing, and we need each other cause this change is certainly uncomfortable at times, reshaping our image into that of the Son.

1We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Keep reading, reprioritizing, and conforming fellas. And thanks for all of your prayers!

Father, continue to bless these men whose desire is to please you and be shaped in the mold you want us to become. You have blessed us with incredible fellowship and helped peel the scales off of our hearts. Guide us to take it to the next level, whatever level that is, whatever direction you want to take us. Be our guide Father, and we will follow. Thank you for your neverending faith and the knowledge that You are behind us. Continue to watch over jrs through this month, help elb and ajb stay healthy, let the planning for timmcd6 and his fiancee continue smoothly, and help ER and co continue to adjust to the new addition and new ministry. We pray these things in Jesus' name,
Amen
