1 Peter 2 (NIV)

1 Peter 2

1Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

4As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."[a] 7Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,[b]"[c] 8and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall."[d] They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Submission to Rulers and Masters

13Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 16Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.
18Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. 20But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."[e] 23When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Good stuff here

11Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

I really like how Paul desrcibes the difficulty of resisting temptation. It is actually like WAR! NO truer words have been spoken.

The whole last section is so counter-culture. It is amazing to think of submitting ourselves to this kind of treatment especially today in our society when you sue if someone looks at you funny.

Lord I pray that Your word fills our every thought. Change us from the inside and let us silence foolish men with good deeds.

Last night I went to a memorial service of a 58 year old man I just recently met who died from cancer similar to my father. It reminded how precious life and how we get caught up in what we are doing and forget to live and to love. Life is precious and our work is only part of God's comand for us. Guys, put a stop to the hurry up sickness that prevails in our world, make time to love your family and your friends.

I echo cas's statments about " put a stop to the hurry up sickness that prevails in our world, make time to love your family and your friends." So true, and its sad how few people recognize it in time.

12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

15For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.

These two verses sum up the mission that God has placed upon my heart. Since I can remember, I've always been a leader by example. Do those things the right way, show others how its to be done, and let your results, your life, your obvious love for family friends and God silence their criticism, or at least let it mean nothing to you.

In the calling that God has urged, I have not been without fault, it has been very easy to do more or better than others, but still not meet God's true standards, to slip in the gap between what God wants and what everyone else does. That is my sin and how I fail at God's demands. I am the person who does just enough to take the lead in the race and simply hold on and beat those around me. In that respect I'm basing my decisions around man, around what's required by man, not by what God requires.

Father, I come to You in honest humiliation. I fall short of Your goals by using the world as a yardstick. Help me overcome my legalstic and competitive nature and instead strive to do those things You want me to do. Conform my will to Yours, and help me to change who I really am to further meet Your demands and requirements. Let me get past my worldly hang-ups Father, and really find You. In Jesus name,
Amen

yea, i agree...i forget to "live" as i get so caught up in planning, and lists and to dos. i was thinking today about the fragility of life. it truly is so gentle, so fragile, so precious and at any time things can go good to bad. yet, when things are going good why is it that we always (i always) seem to forget that?

i appreciated the verses on suffering for God. I can think of lots of times when i felt like i was wronged, or i didnt get to enjoy all the fun, because i was trying to do what God wanted. this was a good reminder that my "suffering" is pleasing to God when it is for Him.

Hope you guys are doing well this week!
