James 1
1James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.
Trials and Temptations
2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
9The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. 10But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. 11For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.
12Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
13When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
16Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. 17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
Listening and Doing
19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Good morning fellas. WELL, as we all know, James gives a lot of practical advice for us. He really gives a lot of things to touch on here in the first chapter, but I want to really focus in on the one that is sort of my Achilles heel sometimes.
19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
How amazing is this verse! I can not tell you of all the situations in the past that could have gone so much smoother if I lived this way. It truly is an art to be a good listener. But what is really telling is the second part, the righteous life. Thinking back, my anger is for sure a big player in times when I stumble in my walk. There are so many times I am quick to get angry and then to respond accordingly. And of course, it leads to actions that are for sure are not “God honoring”.
My prayer today is for us all to have a new desire to be quick to listen, and even to take it a step further and to be quick to turn things over to God in prayer before responding. Father help us have the kind of spirit that wants to listen and pray about things so we can respond in away that is honoring to You.
IN Christ,

Greetings Fellas,
I really needed this chapter. Just yesterday I was telling Clark that I know what I need to do but just don't do it. So verses 21-24 really hit me.
(21) Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
(22) Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (23) Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror (24)and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
So often I live my life listening to the word of God but not truly obeying the word of God.
Lord, I come to you today asking for you to touch my heart so that I will not be a foolish man and give us all the desire to be good listerners and not react in angry.
Have a Bless day,
LT
James 1
The whole chapter should again be a guidebook. Such true and wise advice. I thought I'd bring up this verse, cause not being in the middle of a temptation, it came across in a different direction:
13When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
It is interesting to consider the fact that temptation is not stemming from God, in contrast to the fact that God has prepared us for every trial. I've thought many times that God has tested me, but instead, God prepares me for a test, a temptation, but it doesn't come from Him. Instead, it comes from the enemy or the world. It is our job to use the wisdom God has already planted in our lives.
Father, thank you for Your preparation, Your teaching, Your word, that we may grow to be those who can resist the constant temptations in our lives. Let us instead be focused on You, which is the one true answer. In Jesus name,
Amen

It is great to be back with you all after the hiatus. My family has definitely been under spiritual attack the past month, and we continue to face some of the struggles. Thanks for you steadfastness in prayer and study. You all have been an encouragement to me for sure.
This chapter is one I go to often as a parent and a husband. Something about feeling clueless and "asking for wisdom" seem to go together for me. I am often quick to run to books, advisors, and counselors for wisdom in situations, but God is continually reminding me that life is to be lived on my knees first (not as a last resort).
I also get nailed with the "anger" verses here. I think anger blinds us so often from seeing the heart of the matter. True, righteous anger has a role within the Christian life, but in the end it does not provide the need fuel for righteousness. Only love does!
I also love the last two verses...bridle the tongue, actively pursue justice and mercy for the down-trodden and leave the dust/mire behind. Whenever I focus on moral purity I tend to falter frequently, yet when I focus on the mission at hand (meeting the real needs of others, loving and serving, etc.) I find that I have less time and less desire to wallow in my flesh. That might just be me, but...
Father, thank you so much for you steadfast love that upholds us in all of our trials. Thank you for never tempting us to sin and always providing a way of escape. Lord, I know that my eyes are far more earth bound than heaven focused. Help me (and us) to see with Your perfect eyes the lives around us, especially our families and loved ones. Help us live for the greater good and the King of Kings, rather than the praises of men and the pleasures of mammon. God, I lift up each of my brothers tonight...those who post each day and those who struggle like myself: Fill our hearts with Your Spirit and Truth, Shape and mold our character into Christlikeness, have Your way in our hearts.
In the name of Christ we pray...
