1 Timothy 4 (NLT)

Warnings against False Teachers

1 Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. 2 These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.[a]
3 They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. 4 Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. 5 For we know it is made acceptable[b] by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

6 If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters,[c] Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed. 7 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. 8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 9 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. 10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle,[d] for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.
11 Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them. 12 Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. 13 Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.
14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. 15 Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.

What an amazing chapter. I think crb and I read this a year or so ago and I remember him saying it was almost like a coach giving the players a pep talk at halftime. So many things jumped out at me.

8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

This is the whole point of this blog. Daily training so we can respond appropriately in whatever the situation we are thrown. That our minds are filled with God’s word and that we have more and more scripture to draw on.

and

v12....Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.

I will leave the rest for others to comment on.

Father, I come to You this morning and ask forgiveness for my lack of dedication the last few weeks to this blog and daily reading. Renew my spirit and my commitment and give me the strength to pour all I have in to studying Your word and living it out on this earth. Thank You for these brothers and lift them up this morning as well.

Amen,
cas

I agree with CAS this chapter does seem like a Pep talk. And I must admit I need a Pep talk at times.

Lord, I come asking for continued strength and desire to live my life for you. Thank you for my team of brothers and ask that you watch over us daily.

Amen, LT

As for the chapter, yes it still seems like a pep talk, a good one.
These two jump out at me:
11 Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them. 12 Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young.

I also echo cas' prayer. Its been a busy few months for me, and I've let the blog get away from me from time to time. I ask You, Father, to help keep me close to You, and honest with You and myself. Help me to keep You #1 in my life.
In Jesus' name
Amen

13 Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.

I took the churhc in this passage to be my children, and to be focused on it myself.

Lord. Seems we are all struggling with consistency. Help us to honor you with our consitency. Lord help me to teach my children to read your scriptures more regularly.

In christ's Name, Amen jmb
