Listening and Doing
19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Listening and Doing
19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20 Human anger[g] does not produce the righteousness[h] God desires. 21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
26 If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. 27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

My prayer today is to be a doer of the Word throughout the day, holding my tongue when what I have to say does not come from the heart or glorify God.
"perfect law that gives freedom" - I love that! There is law in the word - but the LAW leads to FREEDOM, not slavery to the law. I believe that Christianity is the only path upon which law leads to freedom and not oppression. I want to be a doer like DSC said, knowing that I have been made FREE!
i know at times that what comes out of my mouth (my tongue) does not represent a God-like approach to living. and truthfully, when that happens, i do have tremendous guilt - but - i seem to always let it happen again. this is an area i need to work on.
Nice comments guys. I want to echo DSC's prayer as well. As TRD confessed I also confess that my tongue is way to sharp and critical especially with my kids.
Agreed TRD. When I find myself hyper critical with my kids, I usually discover that I am measuring them with an adult yardstick. It comes down to MY expectations not being met; MY failure as a parent; a reflection on ME. And wouldn't you know it - it's actually not about ME.

A great reminder. I must also confess that lately I have become critical with my tongue. The sad part is that I know this but yet continue.
Lord, I come to you asking for help and guidance with this area of my daily life. Amen.

Yeah, the whole tight rein on the tongue thing. Very convicting. I would do well to work very hard on this.
Boy, do I need to work at this one! I consider myself decently patient and cool but I really need to work on holding my tongue and especially my mind.
Such a great passage. TBA I agree with you-ditto on the kids. Let's hold firm to the "perfect law" that sets of free of this world. gch
Guys youa ll mailed this one. and....the sad part is how much damage you can do with words. I love the analogy of the wrong yardstick. I know I use the pro athlete adult yardstick half the time.
Blessings
