Proverbs 17 (NLT)

1 A dry crust eaten in peace is better than a great feast with strife.
2A wise slave will rule over the master's shameful sons and will share their inheritance.
3Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the LORD tests the heart.
4Wrongdoers listen to wicked talk; liars pay attention to destructive words.
5Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.
6Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children.
7Eloquent speech is not fitting for a fool; even less are lies fitting for a ruler.
8A bribe seems to work like magic for those who give it; they succeed in all they do.
9Disregarding another person's faults preserves love; telling about them separates close friends.
10A single rebuke does more for a person of understanding than a hundred lashes on the back of a fool.
11Evil people seek rebellion, but they will be severely punished.
12It is safer to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than to confront a fool caught in folly.
13If you repay evil for good, evil will never leave your house.
14Beginning a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
15The LORD despises those who acquit the guilty and condemn the innocent.
16It is senseless to pay tuition to educate a fool who has no heart for wisdom.
17A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.
18It is poor judgment to co-sign a friend's note, to become responsible for a neighbor's debts.
19Anyone who loves to quarrel loves sin; anyone who speaks boastfully[a] invites disaster.
20The crooked heart will not prosper; the twisted tongue tumbles into trouble.
21It is painful to be the parent of a fool; there is no joy for the father of a rebel.
22A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength.
23The wicked accept secret bribes to pervert justice.
24Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth.
25A foolish child[b] brings grief to a father and bitterness to a mother.
26It is wrong to fine the godly for being good or to punish nobles for being honest!
27A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.
28Even fools are thought to be wise when they keep silent; when they keep their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.

Footnotes:
a. Proverbs 17:19 Or who builds up defenses; Hebrew reads who makes a high gate.
b. Proverbs 17:25 Hebrew son.

Morning guys.

Looks like Mark Twain stole his little quote from the Master of one liners.

28Even fools are thought to be wise when they keep silent; when they keep their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.

Hmmm...Sounds like a plan ehh.

Many more things I could comment on; things I need to work on, or just good general advice. It is kinda amazing that the Lord has us going through this right after my mid-year review and several things have been amazingly useful in helping me make take the appropriate steps to improve in certain areas, but more importantly have a good attitude about what I am doing.

Father, thank you for Your word. Be strong my brothers.

In Christ,
cas

Prov 17
This one jumped out at me:
6Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children.

Lots of examples for me in recent days, i.e. my grandmother had lots of bad news this week, so to hear her granddaughter speak, and find out that everyone is doing great was a huge pick me up for her. Also, the second part: parents and children is certainly reversed from what we normally hear. I found out that my dad (56) is getting married next summer, the fiance is 29. I still am not sure exactly how to react, but I'm certainly going to be supportive.

Father, please watch over my dad and his fiance during this time of engagement and help me to be as supportive as I can. Continue to watch over my grandmother's tests and give her the strength she needs. Keep watching over these men and help them to stay committed to You. In Jesus name,
Amen

3 verses in particular for me:

v1) a take this as follows...it is better for me to be less wealthy, maybe to not have as much material goods, but to be able to relax, to have calmness, to not be at war with people than it is to have riches but being mean, running around ragged, etc. honestly - this one is really speaking to me...my life is just always hurried/rushed. i am trying to take on more responsibilities at work and make more money. i dont have peace. i need help with this. what is the right balance. dont get me wrong, i am not money hungry...i dont spend frivolously at all, but i would like to have more, to pay off school loans for undergrad and grad school for me and my wife, to buy a car and replace one of my 2 that have 120,000 miles on it. so, that's the question for me - what does "peace" look like. is it simply saying, this is the place i am in, these are the cards i am dealt, and being content. am i not at peace if i am proactively trying to better my financial position? usually bettering your financial position means more time, troubles, responsibilities at work. CAS knows this, but i am in the midst of a potential new job that would mean moving. I need your prayers. I need to know why i am pursuing this. am i just always going to be unsettled? is this the right job for me? if so, why? meanwhile, i dont want to move away from family and friends. so, guys, i could use your prayers on this. i am a bit cloudy. it's a little sureal. i am only 1 month into being married too.

v22 - i fall into the trap of negativity...my parents do as well. i think we need to make a conscious choice to be cheerful. it can really change your motivation and outlook and approach to your day. but the point is, it is a choice to be cheerful or not. and it doesnt mean you wont have "crap" in your life. it simply means you are choosing to be happy.

sorry for the long blog!

Father - give us a cheerful heart...remind us to choose to be happy and joyful. Despite what our surroundings may be, and for some they may be quite bad, give us a heart that conquers all the negativity in the world! amen.

Prov 17

10A single rebuke does more for a person of understanding than a hundred lashes on the back of a fool.

Lord - Let us be open to criticism and quick to learn from it.
14Beginning a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

Lord - may I love my wife enough to live V14 daily

28Even fools are thought to be wise when they keep silent; when they keep their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.

Lord - let me be slow to speak, to be humble. There is so much to learn from those around me.
